This is the key test for a carbon used primarily for water filtration. Also an American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) standard, the importance of this number is that it is a good indicator of how well the carbon will adsorb compounds and pollutants from the water. The testing is done by taking a known amount of powdered activated carbon and mixing it into a standard solution of Iodine and water. By measuring the remainder of the Iodine in solution, the amount of Iodine absorb can be determined. This value is expressed as milligrams of Iodine adsorbed per gram of activated carbon. There are two indications for changing the filters:
- When the filtering rate becomes very slow. It is possible that the pores
in the filter have been covered by sludge from the pipe water.
- Using the Electronic Monitoring System. This system can indicate
the volume of water used accurately & remind you to change a new filter.
Note : The lifespan of the filters cannot be calculated using the number of family members in a household but depends upon the water usage & the lifespan of filter. |
